Autism...
The National Standards Project

September 24, 2009

Autism causes children to experience the world differently from the way most other children do. It's hard for them to talk with other people and express themselves using words. Children who have autism usually keep to themselves and many can't communicate without special help.

Every day, our brain interprets sights, sounds, smells, and other sensations that we experience. If our brain couldn't help us understand these things, we would have trouble functioning, talking, going to school, and doing other everyday things. Children can be mildly affected by autism so they only have a little trouble, or they can be severely affected and they need a lot of help.

The National Autism Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting effective, evidence-based treatment approaches, and to providing direction to families, practitioners, organizations, and policy-makers.

We invite you to browse The National Autism Center for more information.
