Applied Course Description, Rationale, and Goals

Course Description:
This course will focus on student understanding and mastery of the writing and reading skills related to everyday life. Students will focus on development of their ability to write for a variety of audiences and purposes, including various letter types, resumes, and job applications. Students will also focus on proper interview techniques, participate in mock interviews, and practice conversation skills. Vocabulary development and proper use of grammar will be emphasized.
Rationale:
Communication skills are central to both cognitive and social development. Students read, write, speak, view, and listen in order to find and interpret information, as well as combine their knowledge and experience. Communication skills enable students to explore possibilities and generate new ideas, solve problems, make decisions, and communicate their experiences to others. A balanced Language Arts curriculum will equip students with the skills necessary to function successfully in today’s society. This class is designed to give students all of the language skills they will need in order to succeed in whatever path they choose. The writing, listening, and speaking skills students will gain in this class will beneficial in any setting.
Course Goals:
1. Students will enhance writing and conversation skills designed to help them obtain a job after high school.
2. Students will increase vocabulary.
3. Students will increase writing skills to allow them to participate fully in life outside of school.
